There are 49 million euros in the General Estimates for 2021 to launch the program, which follows the line brought by María Luisa Carcedo, former holder of Health and defender of oral health for all.

The negotiations are in an incipient period, says the Department of Consumer Protection of Spain, which is why it will participate to prevent successes like those of Dentrix and iDental.

The cards recognize that the objective is the progressive incorporation of public dental services, since the current free services only cover more serious and urgent questions, such as: infections and inflammations, revisions to embarazadas and extractions and dental surgeries.

Some experts remain unsatisfied with the amount of money allocated to the application of the program. “49 million euros It’s a really insufficient amount: we’re touching just a little more than one euro per Spanish every year,” says Óscar Castro, president of the General Dentist Council. “In 2019 we addressed all political parties to demand that this service be public, governed by government, because it causes inequalities that are illogical in a health system like ours”, he states.

María Carcero supports the proposal, and demonstrates the importance of the National Health System providing maintenance of oral health.

María Luisa Carcedo left the Government in 2020, regretting that she had no time to start this public health project.

“With the development level of Spanish society, we cannot continue to maintain that people with fewer resources cannot satisfy all their oral health needs”, I said then.

On average, each Spanish person pays 305 euros per year for dental treatment, and many people can allow it.

Óscar Castro also states that “the most widespread illness in the world is dental caries”. Caries care and its consequences, endodontics, are services that prioritize in a public health system, dice.

“For every 20 euros that the administration or the citizen pays for treatment, only one euro would be invested in prevention”, he says, considering that this would still not work alone, raising 49 million euros in investment.

The Colegio General de Dentistas, promotes the implementation of a model of progressive incorporation, like that of France and Germany, in which dental care is guaranteed to them people in the most vulnerable situation, instead of expanding the types of services.

“We have to know where to start, we are committed to children, elderly people and the disabled. If you have healthy children, you will have healthy adults”, says Óscar Castro.

According to Castro, it would be necessary to apply the law of the health cohesion a la oral health. “Now we have 17 different health systems, of which we only have a childhood care plan, which is why we serve children as part of the autonomous community that was born”, he says.
