Nowadays, what is your biggest fear? Having an illness, Go by airplane, going to the dentist or speaking in public? If you chose the latter alternative, understand that you are not alone. Fear of speaking in public is one of humanity's greatest fears, even greater than the fear of dying.

Based on this information, the limitations of the life of the person who has social phobia and the countless cases he treated in his office, Brazilian psychiatrist José Hamilton Vargou, in partnership with developer Diego Dotta, created Youper – an application to help people with problems with anxiety, shyness and social phobia. The gadget was created based on research into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, one of the most effective psychological aspects in treating anxiety, and is available in English and Portuguese in versions for Android and IOS with weekly plans of R$25.

Unlike most applications of the same genre, Youper is not an online conversation in which the person tells their fears and receives feedback from a professional. After all, assuming that you downloaded something to face your communication problem, talking to someone is out of the question, right? Therefore, it acts as a personalized platform where each person is tested and stimulated using tips and tasks to face their frustrations head on.

Once you download Youper, simply answer a questionnaire to measure your level of social skills and also choose some situations in which you would like to feel more confident. This behavioral assessment follows the standards of a social anxiety test developed at Duke University, in the United States.

With the results achieved at this stage, Youper's creators understood that the circumstances most feared by the 11 thousand people who have already used the application are: looking stupid at a social event, giving a presentation to an audience and talking to unknown people.

After completing these two steps, you will receive activities to challenge your limitations and practical tips such as breathing training and tactics to avoid falling into negative thoughts. Throughout the process, the individual is invited to retake the social skills test to understand their evolution.

It is believed that half of the world's population has some degree of shyness and that 12% suffers from social phobia, but less than 10% of them receive any type of psychological support or diagnosis. “Lack of information and high cost are the biggest barriers for these people to overcome social anxiety.

On Youper, being a personal platform, you can be present 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is something very important to help with any treatment. And if the person is also treating themselves with medication and therapy, the application will be another powerful ally”, says Dr. José Hamilton Vargas.
